How Secure are Smart Speaker?

Photo by Mati Mango from Pexels

Smart Speakers, Virtual Assistants, and Voice Command Devices go by many names but many people have wondered how secure are they. Know4Be.com has a 5-minute video on why you shouldn’t have them in the workplace. Click here to log in and, to view the video go to your Training and choose “Restricted Intelligence Season 7: Ep 01 – Not So Smart (Virtual Assistants)”. If you are unable to access the video please contact Jody at jhattrup@swkls.org to add you to Know4Be.com. Remember these videos count for C.E. Credits.

VERSO Update

A recent update to the Chromium open-source browser project has caused issue in both VERSO and SHAREit where certain operations cannot be completed. This is affecting both the Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge web browsers as they share the common Chromium codebase. We have implemented a temporary workaround to most staff computers system-wide, but if you are experiencing issues please call the SWKLS office for assistance.

Monthly Train UP! Starting

You will notice above that we have our first Monthly Train UP! starting again on August 3. For the first two Kelly will be conducting the Train UP!s and then in the Technology Department will be providing the October Train UP!. If you have a topic that you would enjoy relaying to the System Membership please contact the System office so we can schedule the Train UP!

Costume Program Updates

So far the System office has helped three of our member libraries with programming: Jetmore Public Library (Minion); Scott County Library (Disney’s Beast and we even had Belle); and Cimarron City Library (Minion). Of the three I helped at Jetmore and Scott City and had a fun time with the library staff and their communities. The library staff at Cimarron enjoyed having the Minion at their county fair. The next stop is tomorrow for Haskell Township Library in Sublette with our Cat (Skippy Jon Jones) costume.

If you want to schedule me or a costume contact myself, Tandy, or Kelly so we can place it on the calendar.

VERSO Report: “Bibs Without Items”

This report counts globally–all of the bibs without items in Swiftnet. It deletes bibliographic records which have no items attached to them. These are records which can be characterized like this:
— 1 — A holding (barcode, call #, location, etc.) has been deleted but not the bib record. For example, the item Seasons of the Dragonflies (above) was deleted, but the bib record still exist. If you click on Book, you will see the bib record, Goodreads, and NoveList. However, “where to find it” will be empty.
— 2 — Only the bib record was added to your library, not the holding information.
— 3 — These records will confuse ILL activity in SHAREit. Many of our members have experienced receiving a request for an item they do not own. Bibs without items might be the reasons why.

The SWKLS Office used to run this report monthly, but we stopped in March 2020 at the advice of Auto-Graphics. Now, SWiftnet has 10,448 bibs without items, slowing searches and affecting accuracy. AG has recommended we commence a monthly schedule. Therefore, this report will run on Sunday AM.

Cat Express Usage Report: End of the Year 2021

Our final report for year 2021 is available on our Wiki. There will be no overages! Well done, SWKLS!
Year 2022 began on July 1 and will end on June 30, 2022. Please, keep accurate records of your library’s usage. / Link

Tumble Books is Officially Back

Andy Schafer, Digital Collections Librarian for Kansas State Library, has officially sent out notice that the State of Kansas Library has reacquired TumbleBooks.

The State Library has recently acquired access to TumbleBooks, which is eligible for classroom use. The TumbleBooks platform provides content such as picture books, chapter books, learning games and more to support understanding of the material. Along with TumbleBooks, the State Library also provides access to other digital book platforms and databases applicable to classroom use as well as pleasure reading and entertainment. Our plethora of online resources covers several content areas and spans multiple ages/grades from pre-K to adult. To access these resources, you can visit our website or view the attached document for an abbreviated version of our offerings (all images are linked to resources). Most of these resources can be accessed on any public computer or personal device if you have a Kansas internet provider, otherwise, you can visit your local public or school librarian to register for a “Kansas Library eCard”.
Included you will find the above-mentioned document along with a brochure and instruction on how to issue “Kansas Library eCards“. If you do not know your Administrative Login Credentials to issue cards you can request them here
