SpongeBob SquarePants is Everywhere

SpongeBob helped Hamilton County Library kick off the Summer Reading Library Program at the Syracuse Elementary School. He met a lot of new people. The first was a board member for the library, Colten Soelze, and next, he high-fived a 1st grader. Finally, he greets a kinderprep teacher and student. What a fun day for SpongeBob!!

SpongeBob visited the Satanta Grade School on May 17, 2022, to promote our Summer Reading Program. Exciting things are coming to Dudley Township Library for the summer.

Kansas Notable Books List for 2022

Acting State Librarian, Cindy Roupe, recently sent out a notification of the new 2022 listing of the Kansas Notable Books Grant Program, of 2021 published book titles. The titles are either written by Kansan authors or highlight Kansas is some form. The 15 titles can be found at this link. The grant isn’t open yet, this is just to show you what titles have been added to the list of possible purchases of titles that the Kansas Notable Books grant will reimburse the library.

The application for the grant is still forthcoming and will be released by the State Library at a future date. The System office will place the application link in the Weekly Wrap UP, when it becomes available.

Lego Build A World of Play Platform

The Lego Foundation has created a “Build A World of Play” platform with several free resources for libraries. The platform is available at no cost to libraries at this time, through this link, and includes adaptable “how to” activity ideas, a catalog of “plug-and-play” activities, and downloadable media and communication assets for use on social channels.

Part of the Lego Foundation’s goal is to highlight the importance of play and learning. The platform/campaign will be available to access from June 10 – August 10, 2022. One question that is on the site is:

“Can I still use your activity guides when the campaign ends?

Yes! In fact, we hope you’ll help us build a world of play long after our official campaign finishes.”

For additional information please visit their site and see if it might have something to offer your library.

“A new Kentucky law will give politicians control over local library boards in the state. The law, which will go into effect in January 2023, will empower local politicians to make appointments to library boards and to control library spending.”

Results from this week’s survey will be made available for the next BOD meeting on June 17th. Thank you to all who participated.

BIG NEWS re: brief bibliographic records / brief bibs / zzz bibs

Finally, each library has the ability to edit settings in Circ Admin to set the default to: “Auto-Delete at check in”! To make this change, go to Circ Admin — Brief Record Options — Click the box next to “Auto Delete at check in”. Completing this step will ensure that new brief bibs will not linger in the catalog after they have completed their purpose (i.e. ILL items, etc.). Yay!

Talking Books

Talking Books is here for any Kansas resident that falls into the medical category to qualify (blind and/or physically handicapped). If one of your patrons needs this service you can print the application form from the State Library of Kansas website here or you can call 1-800-362-0699 to have an application mailed to the patron. The patron will take the application to file out and return to your library. The director of the library can be an authorizing signature when the handicap is evident. If the handicap isn’t evident then the patron will need a physicians signature.

When the application is turned in to the library and all signatures are signed then you will need to send it to the System Office to Richard Brookman. From there he will make a copy of the application and forward the original application to Talking Books, headquartered at Emporia State University. The turn around for a machine and the starting titles should be approximately 2 weeks.

With mail service being slow at times it could be up to 1 month. If for any reason between that 2 week to 1 month period the patron has not received their machine and beginning titles have them report it to the library. From that point the library will need to contact Richard Brookman to follow-up on what is taking so long for the Talking Book product to reach the patron.

Also the System will come to your community to do a talk about Talking Books for your patrons if you wish. This program is state funded and is part of the System’s services. If you have any interest in having the System come out and do a Talking Books presentation please contact Richard Brookman at rbrookman@swkls.org.

Engaging Adults with Low Literacy Levels

On July 7, 2022, WebJunction will be hosting “Engaging Adults with Low Literacy Levels” webinar. It will begin at 2:00 pm CT with Katharine Ware, Writing and Education Consultant, presenting.

“In the U.S., there are 43 million adults–nearly one in five–who read below a third-grade level, and over half of all adults read below a sixth-grade level (National Action Plan for Adult Literacy, 2021). Low levels in literacy can impact many aspects of daily life including the ability to find and maintain employment, navigate health care needs, and complete government forms. This webinar will explore the characteristics of adults with low literacy levels and how they differ from those of adults with learning disabilities, including how and why each of these groups approaches reading. Learn about the importance and value of developing literacy skills, as well as strategies for library staff on how to identify when someone may need literacy support, how to broach the subject with a patron, and ways to suggest materials and resources to reluctant adults who may be struggling with literacy.”

If you are interested in this WebJuction webinar follow this link to register.

Scott County Library Programming

Poppy

Scott County Library has had a lot of fun and creative programs going on over the last couple of months. This is their second year participating in the Kansas Corn Stem program.  This Stem program was developed by the Corn Commission and offered to libraries across Kansas. The Corn Commission provided lessons and hands-on learning materials. The lessons showed the importance of corn to Kansas and the World. Millie, the Youth Services Librarian, also added another lesson about popcorn, and “Poppy” the air popper dragon came out to play.

Scott County Library’s new program is called ” Read and Hike.” The Library and the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks have partnered up. Children can come into the Library and check out a backpack. The backpack contains a book, a day pass to the lake, and vouchers to the Beachhouse which has food items and supplies for campers, hikers, and fishermen.

Scott County Library has lots of fun promoting the mystery books (which are wrapped books) on the children’s side so they decided to develop it into a passive program for their adult patrons. “Read with me and have a cup of tea” was the adult version of the mystery books during the month of March. It also was a big success.

Read and Hike

Grant County Library is Getting Ready for Summer

Sponge Bob made an appearance at Grant County Library to help kick off the  Summer Reading Sign-up for all ages on Monday the 2nd. He will also visit the elementary school. Maribel one of the Grant County Library staff members will talk to the elementary students about Summer Reading Program. They will also have school tours coming to the library where Sponge Bob will make another surprise appearance.

Grant County Library has created a Bingo card for several years for adults. This year they have added a Facebook link to the paper card option.
