Interactive Movies – How To Make Your Movie Days Into Live-Action Events!

The image above is from Rock Island Public Library in Rock Island, Illinois. Have you ever heard of the Rocky Horror Picture Show audience participation events? For anyone who hasn’t, the Rocky Horror Picture Show is a cult classic that came out in the 1970s and many theaters and venues like to host audience participation nights with fans of the show. They dress up and they act out parts of the movie as it plays. Fans thoroughly enjoy these events and they draw sizeable crowds. We can do the same thing in our libraries and our communities with popular family movies.

There’s something to be said for watcing a movie AND participating with it – especially when it concerns movies that have a large fan base. Many of us have that relative or friend (or even ourselves) who is *obsessed* with Star Wars, The Princess Bride, Grease, etc. and would be first in line to attend an interactive showing! All you need is a popular family movie and some imagination to create actions to go along with different parts of the movie. (Of course, make sure that you are complying with your movie licensing agreement.) Invite patrons to dress up as their favorite characters and bring props, if they have them. You can even have a small prize for best-dressed. Adults and children alike enjoy sing-along movie events, as well. Hand out copies of the movie scenes and their actions before the film starts and watch the fun unfold.

In the spirit of the Spice Girls: Tell me what you want, what you really, really want! 🙂 I want to hear from you! Right now, I have a very short, 4-question survey out about what YOU would like to see and learn from us in 2024. Please, if you have not already, take a couple of minutes and just answer these few questions – it would mean the world to me! To everyone who’s already done it, THANK YOU! We are excited to see the results coming in!

<– Click the image to the left to make your voice heard!

Patrons come in to use the Internet all the time, but do they know how to protect themselves online? In this Twosday Takeaway, join SWKLS Technology Supervisor Steve Andrews to learn the basics of teaching your patrons some Internet safety tips that will have them safely surfing the web with confidence. Register here and don’t miss out!

ALA’s Games and Gaming Round Table National Gaming Survey

From State Librarian Ray Walling:

To improve relationships between libraries and vendors, gain donations and sponsorships for ALA Play and International Games Day, and grow collaborations with industry partners, the executive board of the Games and Gaming Round Table (GameRT) has created a short survey to collect data related to games in libraries.

This short (10 question) survey will not only help with publisher relationships but will help GameRT understand the evolving nature of games in libraries. If your library does not collect or use games, we still ask that you take the survey to help us gain a better understanding of the field. Contact information will only be used to follow up for clarifications. Non-anonymized data will be kept separate and retained for a maximum of one year. If you have any questions before or after taking this survey, please contact the GameRT executive board at gamert@ala.orghttps://bit.ly/GameRTgamingsurvey

Question on Library Board Members – Richard Brookman

During the APPLE Library Law session I taught this last week a question was brought forth that I thought our membership might appreciate the answer to as well as the APPLE students.

In one city the City Clerk is voted into her position by the City Council and the question was since that job position was voted on by the City Council did that count as being in a public office. The answer is found in Attorney General Opinion No. 2013-19. The last sentence gives the overview of the opinion and the qualifiers in a position can be considered a municipal officer.

“…for appointment to a municipal library board is a fact-specific question that will turn on issues such as the type of municipality, the form of municipal government, whether a statute or ordinance creates the position,…”

The key words are whether a statute or ordinance created the position. If no statute or ordinance created the position the vote by the City Council to fill the City Clerk position is just a form of procedure and the City Clerk could still set on any board, to include the library board.

KLA Grant Opportunity for APPLE 2024

From April Hernandez, President of the Public Library Section of KLA:

This year the Public Library Section of KLA has two $500 grants available to fund library director participation in APPLE 2024. The application will open by the end of January, so keep an eye out for it. These grants are available to library directors who have no other funding options for the program.

More information: APPLE (APplied Public Library Education) is a year-long training program exclusively for public library directors in Kansas. Managing a library has no counterpart in other types of work and day-to-day library operations are not the focus of library science schools. The APPLE program covers the vast array of topics required to operate a Kansas public library and connects the cohort of new directors with resources: fellow directors, regional system staff and experts from around the state.

A message from Caroline Handwork

This is an update for those libraries that ship via Trans-Amigos Express, one of our out-of-state partners that connects to libraries in Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas.

Trans-Amigos libraries are now using new shipping labels.  The look is slightly different than before, but the information on the label is still the same.  Their new labels each feature a unique single-use QR code that TAE drivers will scan.  Their drivers will no longer scan the sticker barcodes that have been placed on bags.  If you come across any KLE or TAE courier bags with the TAE sticker barcode attached, please remove the sticker and throw it away.  If your library has any extra sheets of the TAE barcodes, please send them to me at the Northeast Kansas Library System, KS131, and I’ll return those to Trans-Amigos.

* Please note, KLE libraries will still use the same shipping labels you have been using to ship to TAE libraries.  Here is a link to that template and information, https://kslibexpress.mykansaslibrary.org/trans-amigos-express-connection/.  Kansas libraries will not have a QR code or barcode to use or keep track of when shipping to TAE libraries moving forward.  This change is effective immediately.

If you have questions, please get in touch with Caroline at chandwork@nekls.org.

Passwords Habits Holiday Shopping

With Christmas just around the corner and everyone buying gifts online, now is a good time to exercise good password habits. Passwords serve as the guardians of our personal and sensitive information. Whether it’s accessing our email, social media accounts, or online banking, a strong password is the first line of defense against cyber threats. Unfortunately, many individuals still underestimate the importance of adopting secure password habits, putting themselves at risk of cyberattacks and identity theft. In this article, we’ll explore the significance of password habits and provide valuable tips to enhance your online security.

The Importance of Strong Passwords

A strong password is the foundation of digital security. It acts as a virtual lock to protect your personal data from unauthorized access. A weak or easily guessable password leaves you vulnerable to hackers who can exploit your accounts and compromise your digital identity.

Avoiding Common Password Mistakes

Too often, individuals fall into the trap of using common, easily guessable passwords. Some of the most commonly used passwords include “123456,” “password,” and “qwerty.” Such passwords are like leaving the front door of your digital house wide open for attackers.

Password Length and Complexity

To create strong passwords, prioritize length and complexity. Aim for passwords that are at least 12 characters long, combining uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters. The longer and more complex your password, the harder it becomes for hackers to crack it.

Unique Passwords for Each Account

Using the same password for multiple accounts is a grave mistake. If one account gets compromised, all your other accounts become vulnerable too. Implement a unique password for each account to contain potential damages and secure your online presence effectively.

Change Passwords Regularly

Routine password changes add an extra layer of protection. Consider updating your passwords every three to six months, or whenever there’s a suspicion of a security breach.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Enhance your security further by enabling two-factor authentication wherever possible. 2FA requires a second verification step, such as a fingerprint scan, SMS code, or authentication app, making it significantly harder for attackers to breach your accounts.

Password Managers

Keeping track of numerous complex passwords can be challenging. A password manager can be an invaluable tool, generating strong passwords and securely storing them in an encrypted vault. This way, you only need to remember one master password.

Beware of Phishing

No matter how strong your passwords are, falling for phishing attempts can compromise your accounts. Be cautious of suspicious emails, messages, or links that may lead you to fake login pages.

Regular Security Checkups

Conduct regular security checkups of your online accounts. Review login activity and ensure there have been no unauthorized access attempts.

In conclusion, practicing strong password habits is essential to safeguarding your digital world. By creating unique, complex, and regularly updated passwords, enabling two-factor authentication, and being vigilant against phishing attempts, you can significantly reduce the risk of falling victim to cyber threats. Stay proactive, stay secure!

Thanksgiving Holiday

Just a reminder that the System Office will be closed next Thursday and Friday (November 23 & 24) in observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday.

Thank you for all you do for the System and your local libraries. Lately the profession has been under pressure. However, I believe that many within your communities still support your library. Reach out to your patrons and thank them for their support. Also reach out to your community that doesn’t think about the library and what you have to offer them and their families. You might find some hidden support you didn’t know you had and begin building those relationships.

Always remember you have support and appreciation for all you do for your communities here at the Southwest Kansas Library System’s office. If you need us always reach out and we will assist you in all we can. Some answers we give you might not be what you wish to hear, because we are limited in the law or procedures. Whatever the answer or advice we give is given to you to help you and try to protect you in your service to your community.

Thank you again for all you do and your support for SWKLS.

Kansas Library Association’s 2023 Conference

If you have never attended a Kansas Library Association Conference please consider it in the future. At conference you get to gather knowledge from so many different people. This can be done during sessions, talking outside of a session, at luncheons, and even when you get a chance to relax and enjoy companionship. You see friends of old and make friends anew to network with during the year.

It was good to see everyone.

As Richard said, I will be pulling double duty until the Collection Specialist position is filled, so please continue to reach out to me for all of your technical services needs until then as I will still be performing the duties of that role, as well. It is a privilege to work with you all and to be entrusted with the responsibilities of this new role. I am excited about our future together and dedicated to the enrichment of our regional libraries and the communities that we serve.

Roku for Checkout

The November edition of Computers in Libraries has an interesting article addressing the exclusive release of TV shows and movies on streaming platforms. Devices such as Amazon Fire TV and Apple CODA enable patrons to access these materials but pose potential issues by divulging library purchasing information and credentials. Notably, the Roku device emerges as a solution, as it restricts users from accessing sensitive information while allowing patrons to stream content.

Each streaming service permits a limited number of simultaneous device connections. Paramount Plus allows three, Hulu permits two, and both Discovery and Disney accommodate four. Each device intended for offering services is pre-registered with the respective streaming platform, and each Roku device exclusively supports a single service. Additionally, streaming services like Tubi, Freevee, and PBSKids, which allow unlimited simultaneous connections, are ad-supported.

Several precautions must be taken before deploying these devices, as streaming services aim to streamline app and subscription purchases. Notably, library credit card information should never be stored on the device. To thwart patrons from using personal credit card information, each Roku account is secured with a Personal Identification Number (PIN). Service management occurs through dedicated websites linked to the login created during account setup, rather than through the Roku interface.

While Roku devices can be acquired with tax exemption, subscriptions to streaming services are regrettably ineligible for tax exemption. Credit card payments are accepted for each service, with some offering annual subscription options. In the event of lost or missing devices, remote disconnection and disabling capabilities exist. Each Roku device has a unique login, allowing the Roku account linked to streaming services to be unlinked and transferred to another device.

It is important to note that this model is not applicable to Netflix due to a policy change limiting accounts to a specific IP address. Setting up a Roku for checkout, particularly in multiples, can be time-consuming. Upon return, each Roku must undergo a reset to eliminate histories and stored information, such as location history. Restricting the number of staff members authorized to reset a device is recommended to mitigate potential password leaks. A meticulously maintained spreadsheet for tracking device information proves invaluable in this process.

Always feel free to contact me for training requests, library cards, or technology issues at cdressler@swkls.org or (620)225-1231. – Christopher Dressler – 11/17/2023

Kansas Attorney General Opinion No. 2023-10

A question about whether a board member can be excluded from an Executive Session has recently been asked of the Kansas Attorney General. Specifically when the said public board is discussing the petition or possible future litigation.

The majority of what I will be writing is from the AG Opinion. If you would like to read the complete opinion you can do so at this link.

“KOMA does not directly address this situation…Nonetheless, KOMA’s language implies members of a public body may be excluded from an executive session under these circumstances.”

…”to invoke an attorney-client executive session, the ensuing discussion must be privileged under the attorney-client relationship. The presence of an opposing party at the meeting waives the privilege, thereby defeating the justification for the executive session and placing the public body at risk of violating KOMA.”

“In sum, we conclude a public body may exclude members who have threatened litigation against the body from an executive session held to discuss the possible litigation with its attorney. By reaching this conclusion we stress that our opinion is limited to these circumstances; we do not suggest a public body may generally exclude a present member from an executive session.”

So in brief a public board (library board) may exclude a board member(s) from an executive session only if said board member(s) is threatening possible litigation. This allows the library board to go into executive session under attorney-client privilege. You cannot exclude a board member(s) from executive session for any other reason.

Question on Workplace Nepotism

The State Library office submitted a question to the Kansas Governmental Ethics Commission regarding local workplace nepotism. The following is the key take away in the Commission Counsel’s response.

…”the Commission only has advisory authority regarding conflict-of-interest questions for local level libraires…and for the regional system of cooperating libraries.”

“For local libraries, the only conflict-of-interest laws that would apply are K.S.A. 75-4301a et. seq. There are no prohibitions on hiring family members or a spouse under the local level conflict-of-interest laws. So, hiring family would only be prohibited if the municipality has enacted rules prohibiting nepotism. The only conflict-of-interest prohibition that is likely to apply to the local library employees is K.S.A. 75-4304, which, concerns the making and administration of government contracts.”

Here is my opinion on the last sentence of the last paragraph. When the library board is looking at contract submittals and a board member is related to an entity or person submitting a bid for contract, then that particular board member should recuse themself from any decision making in regards to the contract. As with any questions concerning legalities you should consult with the appropriate legal counsel.

The office of the Ethics Commission also stated that, “Any of the three kinds of libraries you have identified,” (State, regional, local), “can request formal Commission opinions, including the local level libraries.”

ICYMI: Details About the Latest VERSO Update

VERSO had an update on 11/02. The following are changes that occurred during that update, provided by VERSO Product Manager Julie Cavender:

RESOLVED

AG-2675Some component colors, such as the “Show More” option in a facet list, have been adjusted to provide better color contrast. The changes comply with Section 508 requirements for accessibility.
AG-2728CS-77616After entering a Username/Barcode and Password/PIN on the Login screen, users were required to click the Submit button to log in. This has been corrected so that users can enter their Password/Pin and hit the Enter key to log in.
AG-2695 Guests are prompted to login as patron or staff when requesting a hold on an item. After hold is placed, user was being returned to the login screen. This is resolved so that users return to where they were when they clicked on the hold button.
AG-2739 When using the OverDrive API and selecting an issue of a magazine, the issue did not update on the screen. This has been corrected.
AG-2772CS-77796Searching orders using the Item Status screen and navigating the results screen sometimes led to an error. The issue was addressed, and the error screen resolved.
AG-2803 Order status results were not displaying ISBNs when ISBNs existed in the order. This is corrected so all ISBNs in an order are displayed.
AG-2594Duplicate reports have been removed from the Reports Module.
AG-2799When transactions are not associated to a user, the Circulation by User Type report displayed the user type as “Undefined*.” This has been corrected so that only user-defined circulation data is displayed.
AG-2805 The Weeding by Collection Type header of the downloaded report did not match the header shown on screen. This has been corrected.

IMPROVED

AG-2796The Circulation by Material Type report has been updated. The online view of the report is now displayed without page breaks. The PDF view of the report now displays a repeatable page header, and footer and report column header. This view also includes pagination and the report grand total in the page footer.

NEW

AG-2760A new search function has been added to the new Reports Module. This feature provides the functionality for users to filter by report name.

No More Dust Bunnies an AI Poem

In the season of Fall, a cleaning tune,
Not just for homes, but for gadgets too, and soon.
Dust off the cobwebs, wipe the grime away,
Extend the life of tech, let’s do it today.

Old photos and videos, from your phone let them soar,
To the cloud they go, OneDrive and Google, and more.
Social media, a storage treasure,
Making space for Winter, a memory-filled pleasure.

Now gather supplies, a mix with care,
Isopropanol and water, a tech-friendly pair.
Electronics, wipe them down with a microfiber dance,
A poetic cleansing, a digital romance.

Cellphones, tablets, and monitors, behold,
A solution on cloth, a tale to be told.
A dance with the screen, camera, and case,
Canned air joins, a dust-busting embrace.

Laptops, computers, a saga unfolds,
A screwdriver’s touch, a story to be told.
Fans and heatsinks, secrets they hold,
Cautiously open, let the story be bold.

Metal fins and chips, a delicate dance,
Canned air whispers, a cooling chance.
The cover back, a protective stance,
Wipe it down, a poetic advance.

Cables, the unsung heroes, under desks they roam,
Unplug, swipe, check for breaks, make them a poem.
Shielding worn, cracked, or torn,
Replace the cable, a tech reborn.

In the poetry of Fall, a cleaning ballet,
Gadgets revived, ready for the day.
So, unplug, wipe, and dance with glee,
In the rhythm of cleaning, let tech roam free.

Senate Bill 13 and House Bill 2104 Update

After setting in on the Kansas Department of Administration Municipal Services Budget Workshop, it is clear that several people still have questions about the new budget process for governmental entities. The main thing they emphasized is for department heads (which includes librarians) to get to know your county clerk and/or city clerk so you can work within the time frame and valuations they need you to work within.

The SB 13 and HB 2104 is in effect for the 2022 budget cycle and your county and/or city may have to have a Revenue Neutral Rate (RNR) Hearing this year between the dates of August 20 – September 20 depending on if they exceed the RNR.

The System Office is working on getting a workshop for our members through Kennedy, McKee & Co to explain the nuances of these two bills.

First Friday with Friends

June 4 is the “First Friday with Friends” session. It will begin at 9:00 am and last approximately an hour. During this session the discussion topic is “Making Memberships Meaningful”. Recent Scoping Problem in

For the past 10 days, scoping in VERSO has been broken. Libraries are seeing search results for all SWifnet libraries, instead of just to their own. AG is aware of this problem and is working hard to fix it ASAP. I will send an email to everyone when the issue has been fixed. Thank you for your patience!

Tails and Tales Swag

Modern Marketing is a resource for customizable summer reading swag, such as bookmarks, totes, stickers, tattoos, posters, etc. Clink this link — Categories — Libraries. In the search bar at the top, type “tails and tales” then enter. A list of available items will appear. Or, you can call Representative Bonnie King (866) 992-5400. She may be able to offer you discounted pricing.

Spring U.P.! with the SWKLS Unity Project

Recently, the SWKLS Staff sent care-packages to all of our members. Inside the package were bookmarks and seed packets–gifts for your staff. Plant those seed packets, take pictures of the seedlings, and submit to SWKLS Staff. At Tech Day+ on September 24th, we will award prizes to the libraries with the best growth. Cultivate those seed packets, take pictures with your staff, and win a prize!

If your library did not receive enough bookmarks, or you would like a few more, please let us know.

StoryWalks® in Kiowa County

Summer Library (Reading) Program Posters

If you remember at the last Full Board meeting for the System I reported, through Millie Dearden (Scott County Library), about the wording on the Spanish Summer Library Program Posters possibly offending your patrons.

Sandy Wilkerson, Kansas Representative to the Collaborative Summer Library Program, spoke at the this week’s Youth Consultants Meeting that she reported it to CSLP. The Collaborative came back that when they did the test marketing for the posters no mention there being a possible offensive word being on the Spanish posters. The Collaborative will not be issuing new posters this late. Libraries will need to use their own discretion on if they wish to use the posters or not.

Summer Library (Reading) Program PSAs

The Collaborative Summer Library Program consortium has created two PSA videos that you can use to advertise the Summer Library Program on your website or Facebook page. The videos are below for you to watch and you can go to the Collaborative’s Youtube Channel to get the url’s.

Project Launch: Very Merry VERSO

In accordance with the SWKLS Unity Project, SWKLS U.P.!, we are working to improve how SWiftnet (SWKLS’s VERSO) functions, including searchability, location accuracy, cataloging, etc. As discussed during last Friday’s board meeting, the SWKLS Staff will work with our members to ensure SWiftnet is organized as accurately as possible. This project will take several years to complete.

To accomplish this task, we are pleased to announce our new cataloging project called Very Merry VERSO. Beginning September 1, we will begin a pilot project with a volunteer library: Haskell Township Public Library in Sublette. We are grateful to Director Sara Koehn and her staff for volunteering to be our pilot library, and we look forward to commencing Very Merry VERSO in the autumn. Thank you, Haskell!
