Dolly Parton Imagination Library Update

This update on the Dolly Parton Imagination Library comes from Tammie Benham, Youth Consultant for Southeast Kansas Library System that has been working with the Kansas Children’s Cabinet and Trust Fund to bring the program to all of Kansas.

Kansas Children’s Cabinet and Trust Fund is expanding access to the Dolly Patron Imagination Library program in Kansas.  This first year is a planning year where they will work with existing affiliate programs throughout the state to coordinate efforts.  However, during the first year, some programs are being added in counties where there has never been an affiliate program.
According to the Program Coordinator, Pam Hunsaker, those looking to become affiliate programs in counties where an affiliate has never been established will have their program subsidized at $12.50/per child per year, or half the $25 year/per child cost of the program, by the Children’s Cabinet and Trust Fund.

In the second year, all programs in Kansas will receive the same $12.50 year/per child subsidy.
Consider how your community might support this program.  Do you have a business or club that might be interested in supporting early literacy development?  Could your library budget $120 to sponsor 10 children on a first come first serve basis?
For more information about becoming an affiliate program, please contact  Pam Hunsaker at phunsaker@imaginationlibrary.com.
You can check for an affiliate program in your area here: http://allinforkansaskids.org/imaginationlibrary

About Day By Day

Families, caregivers, educators, and librarians can use the Day By Day Family Literacy Calendar at home, library, classroom, or on the go. With a perpetual calendar featuring songs, activities, book suggestions, and videos, Day By Day supports early literacy skills and helps young children get ready for school.

Collaborators and Support

The Day By Day Family Literacy Calendar began as a project of the South Carolina State Library, developed in partnership with many agencies and organizations, and primarily funded by a Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). The State Library of Ohio customized the branding and state-centric content of the calendar for Ohio to create Day By Day Ohio and developed an open source generic calendar for other states to customize. The Ohio project was funded in part with federal LSTA funding from IMLS. The calendar was edited by students of the UT-Knoxville School of Information Sciences and members of the TN Library Association Children and Young Adult Roundtable under direction of the Tennessee State Library & Archives.

Accreditation Applications Due October 31

This is a reminder that the Accreditation Applications are due October 31, 2021. This application period will be for 2022 – 2023.

Part of the Accreditation Application moving forward is the inclusion of your library’s Technology Plan. If you haven’t done so already, you will need to send the Technology Department a draft of your current plan so they can make any updates that need to be added to your new plan. Once they send you back the updates you will need to make the edits and have your library board approve the Technology Plan. Once that is done the Technology Department will need to receive a copy of the approved plan for the Office files.

With the TechDay+ training days coming these next two Fridays I will wait until they are over to see where each library stands with the current years Accreditation Agreement. Once I record the Continuing Education hours for these events I will send out direct emails to library’s that still need to meet this year’s Accreditation Agreement and what the office still needs for that particular library’s Accreditation Application.

Kinsley Library has Poetry on the Plains

Despite the 100 degree temperature and 20mph wind, eighteen people gathered on Joan Weaver’s prairie hill last Saturday for a gathering of two-leggeds with poetry and a picnic. The birds who chose to attend this Kinsley Library event were the ones who love to ride the wind – the swallows, hawks and the brown headed cowbirds flying their graceful murmuration ballet. Humanities Kansas sent bird enthusiast Molly Zahn and poet Megan Kaminski to lead the group in mindfully noticing the sights, sounds and feelings of nature while appreciating the poetry inspired by birds in the chapbook “Words of a Feather”.

What is CatExpress?

For our new catalogers, I wanted to write a little explanation here. CatExpress is a copy-cataloging program created by OCLC. If you cannot find a bibliographic record in VERSO, you can check CatExpress for a record. This is a service we pay for, and all our members are welcome to use it! During Tech Day, we will offer a class to show you how to use this cataloging option. For more information, please visit the SWKLS Wiki. / Link

If you have not already done so, please respond to me email from 9/13 in which I inquired about updating each library’s information in CatExpress.

Welcome Rhonda Sieck as Scott City New Director

SWKLS would like to welcome Rhonda to the system. Thank you Rhonda for sending in little a introduction so we can get to know you a little better. We are so happy to have you on board.

Rhonda Sieck

My spouse is Tony Sieck and we have been married 28 years. In my lifetime I have owned a shoe store and was Liberian for our grade school and middle school for several years. I then worked nine years in the newspaper business. I am so proud of my old boss. She has written a book which I will host a book signing for in November of this year.

I have two boys Patrick, who lives in Wichita and he has two boys Carson (21) and Jackson (13). Andrew and his wife Amanda live in Goodland. They have three children, Brooke (20), Blake (18) and Cameron (9 mos).

I moved from Goodland to Scott  City about 15 years ago. While in Goodland I was the Director of Actives as well as Resident advisor in our retirement home/center.  Since moving down to Scott City I have worked for an attorney for 13 years. I then went back into the medical field and worked for a chiropractor before leaving to become Director of the library.

We have 2 fur babies. Both are brindle Whippets, Dakota and Bella.

I so enjoy our small community and have been involved in many activities. My favorite is volunteering at my church. I enjoy quilting, reading books ( I belong to several book clubs) and working in my flower beds, but most of all my grandchildren. I also enjoy fishing, boating and hiking with my older grandchildren. I am looking forward to the youngest one getting older so I might do these things with him.

State Librarian Resigns

Eric Norris, Kansas State Librarian, sent out notice yesterday of his resignation of being State Librarian. He is making the transition to become the next director of the Manhattan Public Library/North Central Kansas Library System. Following is the email he sent out on September 2:

Hello All,

Just sharing the news that I will be leaving my position with the State Library of Kansas in December of this year to serve as the director of the Manhattan Public Library and the North-Central Kansas Library System.

The effective date of my resignation will be determined next week.

I am very excited about this new adventure and the chance to return to public librarianship but, as with most change, that excitement is tinged with a bit sadness… The State Library of Kansas is a fantastic organization built on a team of dedicated and talented librarians, and I will truly miss working with them.

It has truly been an honor to serve the State of Kansas from the third floor of the Capitol and I am proud to be part of this rich history.

I am currently working with the Governor’s office about the transition and I will share what information I receive.

Thank you,

Eric

YALSA T3 Training

For those that missed the first couple of rounds (in-person and/or virtual) training sessions for the Young Adult Library Services Association’s T3 training on “Connecting with Teenagers with Connected and Computational Learning” a new round of facilitation workshops will be scheduled. The first workshop/facilitation workshop is scheduled for September 13. It will be at the Haskell Township Library in Sublette. You can register here through Eventbrite. There is a limit of 25 attendees.

New Kansas Library Catalog, KICNET Interlibrary Loan Position Filled

As was announced earlier this year Rhonda Machlan, of the State Library, was retiring. The selection of the person to fill the position of Kansas Library Catalog, KICNET Interlibrary Loan, and Associated Projects has been announced and will be Nikki Hansen. The following is a statement from Jeff Hixon, Director of Statewide Services, about Nikki:

“Nikki is a long-time resident of Kansas. She graduated from Washburn University with a B.A. in Art History and from Emporia State University with an MLIS. She has worked in various capacities in Kansas libraries since 2004, most recently as a Reference Librarian with the State Library of Kansas. As a Reference Librarian, she assisted state employees and the public with questions about state government and legislative research. She also coordinated the State Library’s Kansas Reads to Preschoolers program and assisted in the State Library and IMLS ARPA grant program. Nikki enjoys art, books, knitting, food, and a wide variety of music. She currently lives in Topeka with her husband of 14 years, their cat Emmett, and their dog Servo. She looks forward to serving the libraries and citizens of Kansas in her new capacity as Resource Sharing Librarian.

Nikki plans to attend KLA in October and participate in the KICNET Users’ Group session (10am Thursday October 28). Come join us and say hello!”

2020 Kansas Public Library Statistics

Movie Licensing USA Extending Outdoor Viewings

Heather Thompson, Director of Hanston Public Library, has been taking advantage of Movie Licensing USA’s COVID-19 response of allowing certain movie titles outside at not charge. Your library still has to fill out the form for the movie to be watched. She was on the company’s site the other day and she noticed that they extended this program until June 30, 2022. If you haven’t taken advantage of this program opportunity you might check it out here and see if it’s something you can offer in your community. Thanks for the heads up on this Heather.

Talking Books Sample Drive

This past week you should have received a blue case with a new talking books sample. This new drive is to be placed with your library’s sample Talking Books Reader machine. Both are to be used when a patron comes in and wants to work with the reader and drive to become familiar with the machine before they receive theirs from Talking Books.

Talking Books sent you a new drive because it has changed on how books are delivered. It used to be that one drive held only one book. Now one drive can hold three books or more dependent on size of audio files.

Cimarron City Library New Scanner

IQ Flex Large Format Scanner

The Cimarron City Library is now the proud owner of a large format scanner.  This opportunity came to us when Gray County transferred USDA aerial maps dating from 1938-39, 1952 and 1976 to the Library.  These maps are an incredible documentation of how the county changed throughout the years.  The USDA began this program in 1935 after the depression and drought.  The maps are approximately  2’ x 2’ and much too large for the scanner we were currently using.

Because we wanted to provide access to the maps through our online archives, the Library had planned to write a grant for a large format scanner.  However, life has a funny way of happening.  The opportunity to scan the 1967 maps ‘came out of nowhere’ – with a catch.  We would only have a limited amount of time to scan them before they had to be returned to the owner.  With that information in hand, we were able to find local donors interested in preserving the county’s history.

This scanner will not only come in handy for this current project, but for all larger format items.

Assigning Locations: Teen or Adult

These days, it is really hard to tell if a title should be located in YA or Adult Fiction; the line between them is difficult to define. To help our librarians make this decision, here is a list of resources. Special thanks to Amy Brucker, Phoebe Brummet, Sara Munn, and Eve Wayman for curating this list:

  • Ingram’s ipage (must have an account to access) / Link
  • Abdo Publishing / Link
  • Scholastic / Link for Educators’ Store
  • Goodreads / Link to YA Fic
  • ALA’s YALSA / Link
  • NoveList Plus Database (State Lib.) / Link
  • Cloud Library App. (State Lib.) provides reading level descriptions for all ages, e-books and e-audio.
  • Rules of thumb at DCPL: if the main character(s) are between 13-19, it’s usually classified as YA.  We use the term “YA” rather than “Teens” because some of our patrons who are not 13-19 years old also like reading these materials, including adults.

New Librarian in SWKLS

Yaneth Holguin
Dawn Haynes

We are happy to announce our new librarian and library clerk. Yaneth Holguin, who has been our library clerk for the past four years, is now taking over the librarian position. She will be the one who checks your books out, request your interlibrary loans, catalogs the books and so much more. Dawn Haynes is once again assuming the library clerk position and will work Monday and Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons. Dawn was our library clerk from 2008 to 2011, and it is good to have her back on the staff. They both look forward to serving you in these positions. Congratulations ladies!

Monthly Train UP! Starting

You will notice above that we have our first Monthly Train UP! starting again on August 3. For the first two Kelly will be conducting the Train UP!s and then in the Technology Department will be providing the October Train UP!. If you have a topic that you would enjoy relaying to the System Membership please contact the System office so we can schedule the Train UP!

Costume Program Updates

So far the System office has helped three of our member libraries with programming: Jetmore Public Library (Minion); Scott County Library (Disney’s Beast and we even had Belle); and Cimarron City Library (Minion). Of the three I helped at Jetmore and Scott City and had a fun time with the library staff and their communities. The library staff at Cimarron enjoyed having the Minion at their county fair. The next stop is tomorrow for Haskell Township Library in Sublette with our Cat (Skippy Jon Jones) costume.

If you want to schedule me or a costume contact myself, Tandy, or Kelly so we can place it on the calendar.
