Haskell Co had a visit from Skippy Jon!

We had the Sublette Kindergartners come for a visit during National Library Week. They had a picnic under our pavilion, listened to a Skippy Jon Jones book, made cat masks and ate dirt and worms, played with our toys and Legos, and took a walk around our Storywalk and of course met Skippy! A few of the kids said it was “the best day ever!”

Kinsley Library Conducts an “Aprende Ingles” Class

The Kinsley Library conducted an “Aprende Ingles” class this spring.   On April 24, eleven adults graduated in conversational English after meeting on Wednesday evenings for 12 weeks with librarian Yaneth Holguin as the instructor.  Because learning any new language fluently consist of daily practice, Yaneth had every participant download the free Mango app from the State Library of Kansas so they could have a tool right at home to help with pronunciation and practice.

“One of the students compared the Mango App to having me at home with them,” said Yaneth.  “It was so much better than staring at English words she had no clue about their meaning.”

Each week, Beside teaching new vocabulary and how to use verb tenses in their sentences, they reviewed what they had practiced on the app throughout the week.  The last half hour of each class, Holguin introduced games to help the students practice listening and capturing English without trying to read a script.

“I could see each time we met and played games”, said Yaneth, “that their process of translating their thoughts to English was faster than when we started. They were all asking each other questions and answering them, talking about things we liked and shared, like childhood memories.  We laughed a lot, which was a good break as learning a new language is a little nervous versus growing up with a language.  I feel proud that I could break down language barriers so they can pursue their personal goals, and this too, was a learning experience for me! “

This was the first time the Kinsley Library offered a class in English to Spanish speakers and it was Yaneth’s first formal experience teaching it.  Director Joan Weaver reports that it was a great success and they hope to repeat it in the future.

Rolla Library Story Hour: Rain Forests and May Baskets

From Librarian Phoebe Brummett: My Story Hour children walked through a “rain forest” display that the Rolla 5th and 6th grade science classes created.  They learned about all kinds of animals that live in a rain forest.  We then made May Day baskets with flowers from a local garden to deliver later in the day.

New Policy Template on the System’s Wiki

The Template Policy link has a new file available for use. This time I have worked on typing in a template Personnel Manual. It is a rather lengthy document. It is available for the membership to look over and see if they find anything they would like to add to their Personnel Manuals. It is in a Word file as all the templates are so you can download and use them as a base and take out or add to the templates for what best fits your library’s needs.

You can look over the template Personnel Manual along with the other templates through this link.

Cat Express Users: Cat Express Will Be Gone Next Tuesday

This is a reminder that OCLC’s Connexion browser, which houses Cat Express, will be decommissioned next Tuesday, April 30th. If your library uses Cat Express, please be advised that the link in your VERSO to Cat Express will no longer be a valid link. All Cat Express accounts have been transitioned to WorldShare Record Manager and each library has their own URL and passcode to be able to catalog using the new interface. If you do not know your URL and/or passcode, you will need to get in touch with OCLC.

There have been 4 WorldShare Record Manager pop-up training events and I’ve done 3 one-on-ones with more scheduled. If you need a one-on-one training over WorldShare Record Manager, I am more than happy to come to your location and train you and/or your cataloging staff. Please just email me or call the office and let’s set up a time for a visit.

Masters of the Universe Day is on April 28th! What better time to tell your patrons about Comics Plus, provided by the State Library of Kansas? Did you know that you can check out Masters of the Universe comics on Comics Plus? All you need is a State Library of Kansas eCard! Kids and He-Man (or Skeletor) fans of all ages will be delighted to find their favorite characters’ adventures free in digital format.

By the power of Grayskull, may you have a Happy Masters of the Universe Day!

F.C.C. Votes to Restore Net Neutrality Rules

“In a 3-to-2 vote, the five-member commission revived the rules that declare broadband a utility-like service regulated like phones and water.”

What this mean? Net neutrality refers to the principle that internet service providers should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source, and without favoring or blocking particular products or websites. In other words, your internet access should not be limited for what you choose to use it for such as streaming movies or applying for unemployment. The rules prohibit Internet service providers from blocking and throttling lawful content and ban paid prioritization. Cable and telecom companies plan to fight the rules in court, but they lost a similar battle when judges upheld the FCC’s ability to regulate ISPs as common carriers under Title II of the Communications Act.

For ILLers: Sharing About SHAREit

From SHAREit Product Manager Debbie Hensler:

The next Sharing about SHAREit Q&A is scheduled for Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at 11am PT / 12pm MT / 1pm CT / 2pm ET.

[. . .] Registration is open at: https://attendee.gototraining.com/r/2135708315367482881

As usual, there’s space on the registration form to ask questions in advance, and we try to answer as many as possible that are asked during the session.

Additional Sharing about SHAREit webinars are scheduled for:

  • Wednesday, May 22
  • Wednesday, June 19 – ILL Basic Training – this will be a 90-minute basic training for new staff or anyone needing a very basic refresher.

The link to register for each session will be sent about a month in advance.

Last week’s Sharing about SHAREit is posted here: Staff Dashboard > Support > SHAREit.

For Cat Express Users: WorldShare Record Manager Q & A

Here was a question/answer from a training session that I wanted to share with all of you:

Q: When I click the boxes next to my files to upload them to VERSO, the Export button disappears. What am I doing wrong?

A: Nothing. When you click the boxes, a button appears that says “Delete.” The only reason to click the boxes next to the files is to delete them. So, you don’t need to select them in order to upload. Everything in the list will be uploaded to VERSO. So, if you have items in the list you *don’t* want to upload to VERSO, you *can* delete those before you export.

If you need more clarification or just to go over things again, I am available for one-on-one training (call or email to schedule) or I can always do a ScreenConnect with you, as well. Our next WorldShare Record Manager pop-up is going to be at Dodge City Public Library in the Lois Flanagan Room next Monday. Here is the link to register. Hope to see you there!

#TrendyLibrarian is Almost Here! Register Today!

It’s that time of year again and we have a great workshop lined up for you! #TrendyLibrarian (REGISTER HERE) will be held on Friday, April 5, 2024 at the Dodge City USD 443 administration building, from 10 AM to 3 PM (Registration begins at 9:30 AM). The workshop will be seminar style and will be catered by El Charro. We have the following speakers lined up for you:

Michael Lynch is a User Experience Research and Strategy consultant based in Ohio. He holds a doctoral degree in rural sociology.  Formerly a sociology professor at Dodge City Community College, Michael now works directly with librarians and library patrons to enhance the usability of digital research tools and databases.

Michael’s presentation is titled “The Sociopolitics of the Rural Library in the Age of AI.” For the latest on artificial intelligence in libraries, you won’t want to miss this dynamic presentation! An expert on rural community needs, Dr. Lynch will address the importance of digital literacy and how technology can empower rural communities and help bridge the gap between small towns and their urban counterparts.

He will also discuss future opportunities for rural libraries to implement AI and what that might look like as well as pointing to some open-access resources. Invigorating and innovative, this presentation will have you ready and excited to face the digital future of your library!

Did you know? Gen Z watches more anime than any other generation before! Japanese entertainment culture is sweeping the nation, right now, with teens and adults alike reading manga, watching anime, and listening to vocaloids and J-Pop.

But, how do you know you’re buying the right thing? What’s the difference between Seinen and Shonen? What do they even mean?!?! CKLS General Consultant Liz Dukelow and SWKLS Director Richard Brookman are here to answer all these questions and more so that you can grow your Gen Z patron base with confidence!

Books are being rated – and not just on Amazon and Goodreads! SWKLS Consultant/Program Coordinator Sara Wilson will tell you about new proposed legislation that would have our Kansas school library books given content ratings by a taskforce and would compel our schools to abide by the ratings system. Are public libraries next?

Some organizations already provide their own content ratings for books and some authors have even started doing so, as well. What are the effects and how can you help your patrons find the content they’re looking for in your library? We’ll explore these questions and more and then, we hope you’ve brushed up on your movie, TV, and video game ratings because we have a fun trivia game lined up for you! You’ll have a chance to win an extra prize and bragging rights at next year’s #TrendyLibrarian workshop!

“Everything requires an app, these days!” How many times do we hear that (or say that) on a daily basis? App culture is taking over, so learn how to use it to your advantage! SWKLS Technology Trainer Chris Dressler has the latest and greatest apps for library professionals to help make your job a little easier. Come with curiosity, leave with a list of helpful tools!

We will have door prizes, drawing prizes, giveaways, and plenty of things to see, sample, and learn about. Come join us for a day of fun and relaxation and get those CE credits while having a great time! 🙂 Catered by El Charro. Entry fee is $10/member; $75 for non-members. Register now! 🙂

April’s Twosday Takeaway: Doing a Diversity Audit on Your Collection

Join us on April 9th as SCCC Director Casandra Norin shows us ways that we can evaluate our collections to ensure that they are inclusive of the many different viewpoints, cultures, and lifestyles that exist in our communities and in our world.

This presentation is in affiliation with the SWKLS DEI Taskforce.

Would you like to see the SWKLS team in action? We are inviting you to our office on April 9th, from 9 AM to 3 PM (come and go) to spend some time with us, play with some of our technology, and get your questions answered. We drop in on you all the time – now you’re being invited to drop in on us! 🙂

Space is limited, so be sure to get your registration in before it fills up!

Shelf Care

Managing shelf space in a library is no easy task. How full is too full? Do you fill every shelf, top and bottom? What do you do when one section is fuller than another – how do you balance it out? One school librarian recently faced these questions and more. Read her solutions and if you need help shifting, give me a call or email me and I’ll be glad to come out and help!

How to recognize a phishing email

SWKLS Tech Workshop @ DCPL

SWKLS is hosting a Tech Workshop at the Dodge City Public library in March. Sign up at https://www.ubmeevents.com/event/3d9417f9-b3cd-4940-af1a-eebb9620e313.

Let’s Not Go Phishing

Phishing is a technique through email that cybercriminals use to gain access to personal, private, or sensitive information like bank accounts, credit cards, browser histories, or a total remote takeover of your computer. This includes access to your social media accounts and may even create mirror/copies of them. The goal is to identify a phishing email before you fall victim to the crime. Most of these cybercriminals go unpunished for these crimes.

7 Signs of a Phishing Email

  1. Generic Greeting – “Dear Sir/Maam”, “Dear, (your email address)”
  2. From an unofficial(fake) email address
  3. A request for information like a personal information or simply a reply to the email.
  4. Buttons to click
  5. Attachments. Usually malware.
  6. Links to other websites.
  7. Spelling and grammar mistakes.

For one example in the images to the left, the email account it was sent from (noreply@coin…) and the actual address (bakarjadejumoxdrew@…) which do not match and therefore is not trustworthy. Based off of that bit of information (let alone the generic greeting, the attachment with a strange name, and the poor grammar) delete this email immediately.

Kansas Bills that have been Introduced – Richard Brookman

It’s been a whirlwind for the start of the year with Legislative Day mixed in and producing different programs for Library Board training and beyond. During Legislative day I was able to visit with 9 out of the 10 Senators and/or Representatives that make up our area. With the upcoming election coming up for all of the legislators we have at least 1 that will be moving out of our area with the redrawing of the map. Senator Straub mentioned to me that her area and being changed and Senator Doll will be picking up what she used to have in our area.

I was able to have roughly 15 minutes of each of their time at the Capitol. I introduced myself to each Legislator from being the System Representative and that led into how the Systems are structured and the mission to support our member libraires. I mentioned about funding for our libraries and how if State Aid was increased and given a base level how it would help the libraries. Within these conversations I was able to work in stories that were sent in or told to me. Thank you for doing that for me.

Some bills that have been introduced either last year that carried over and some that were introduced this year that are of interest to the library community:

HB 2176 – was introduced last year and has been moved to the Senate Committee on Local Government. This is the bill that would wave the statute for Arkansas City Public Library and Udall Public Library to form districts. The committee had a hearing on February 15 to continue discussion of this topic. The main thing here is that I asked the Senators from our area that are on that committee to look over the pros and cons for what this bill would do in funding. It would help the local library, but be mindful that it would take funding away from the Central Library System to support it’s mission.

Link to follow HB 2176 through bill tracker.

HB 2573 – has been introduced this year and has been referred to the Committee on Taxation. This bill’s short title is “Requiring certain libraries that have budgets approved by taxing subdivisions to be subject to the revenue neutral rate independent of the taxing subdivision.” The way this would effect our profession is that each type of library would have to have there own separate RNR hearings from their local governments and be subject to all requirements set forth with the RNR.

Link to follow HB 2573 through bill tracker.

HB 2700 – has been introduced in this session and has been referred to the Committee on Education with a hearing set on February 14. The short title for this bill is “Establishing the school library rating system task force to develop a rating system for materials available to students in public school libraries and requiring school districts to implement such rating system.

This is a fairly short bill and if passed the task force would contain: 1 member appointed by the State Board of Education; 3 members appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives (1 being a member of the House, 1 being a parent of a student enrolled in a public school, and 1 from a school districts board or superintendent); 1 appointed by the Minority Leader of the House of Representatives from the House; 2 appointed by the president of the Senate (1 being a member of the Senate and 1 being a parent of a student enrolled in a public school); 1 appointed by the Minority Leader of the Senate from the Senate; and 1 appointed from the Kansas Association of School Librarians that is a School Librarian.

Many expect that if this bill does get passed and goes to the Governor’s desk that it will be vetoed.

Link to follow HB 2700 through bill tracker.

SB 358 – is another short bill that has been introduced during this session and has been referred to the Committee on Federal and State Affairs. No hearing has been set for this bill at the time of this writing. The short title of this bill is “Prohibiting school districts and local libraries from prohibiting, banning or restricting books or other media unless certain requirements are met.”

This is one that librarians are pleased to see introduced, but it is uncertain if it will gain any traction. There is some wording that is questionable, described below. Still it is nice to see someone try to help libraries during this time.

For both school or public libraries their has to be at least 5% of qualified voters in the school district or locality of the library have to sign onto a request to prohibit, ban or restrict the media. This low percentage has some librarians concerned.

The other section of this bill for both school or public libraries is the wording of “age-based restriction on obscene or pornographic material.” The courts have defined “obscene” however the courts have not defined “pornographic” or porn. The reason that this hasn’t been defined is because what one person thinks is porn might not be what another person thinks is porn.

Link to follow SB 358 through bill tracker.

You’ve heard of Sip ‘n Paint or Paint Parties. Switch it up with a Glow in the Dark Paint Party! Popular with teens, glow in the dark paint parties are a fun, simple, and memorable way to get creative! Read this library’s experience to see how they pulled it off. Maybe you could try it at your library!

“On February 15, 2024, Microsoft announced that Publisher will reach its end of life on October 13, 2026.  After this date, Publisher will no longer be included in Microsoft 365 plans, and existing on-premises installations will no longer be supported. For Catalogers Using Cat Express: WorldShare Record Manager Training

As you are aware, Cat Express will be discontinued April 30th. You should have received an email from OCLC with your personalized URL and login information for WorldShare Record Manager.

I will be conducting some training sessions on this – I hope to have them ready to go this month and I’ll reach out to you when that happens. In the meantime, OCLC has a very detailed training video on copy cataloging in WorldShare Record Manager as well as an accompanying Learner Guide that features some exercises to get you more familiar with the platform.

I strongly encourage everyone who catalogs in your library to view this training video and complete the exercise/quiz at the end.

A couple of notes about the video: you are set up with the Simplified Cataloging role and we will be adding local data. However, we don’t print from OCLC, so that part is not anything to be concerned with.

Once you watch the video, let me know so you can get CE credit! You will also get credit for any time that you spend reading the Learner Guide and doing the quiz, so be sure to report those to me as well.

Please write down any questions that you have so we can go over them at a future training event. Thank you!
