This library needs your help!

The Briner Library at Central Christian College in McPherson has asked for our help. The library has an extremely small purchasing budget and is looking to adopt weeded items, especially nonfiction published between 2005-present. If you are able to send boxes of your weeded items through the courier, please contact Beverly. Here are the details:

Free spine labels!

The SWKLS office has a large collection of spine labels which we no longer use. The labels are white paper, and there are 64 labels per 8.5 x 11 sheet. They are available at no charge to any of our members. Email Kelly if you are interested. Here are the details:

  • DEMCO product # 14916750
  • Spine labels: 1.25″ x 0.90″ (1 1/4″ x 9/10″)

An interesting tidbit from a neighbor…

Notice that 90% of these titles are self-help books. Very interesting…

Brief Bib Tips:

  1. You may have seen this week’s release notes from Ted Koppel at Auto-Graphics (above). In the brief bib report, a library is now able to run the report for itself, instead of all of SWKLS. (Hint: Check your inbox for Ted’s email on Monday, Feb. 8th.)
  2. Here is an easy way to check your brief bibs, instead of running a report:
    • From the quick search bar or advanced search, enter “ZZZbriefbib” as a subject search in your library. Voila!
  • NOTE: Checking your library’s brief bibs monthly is considered a best practice. Reminders have been included in the SWKLS U.P.! Calendar. / Link

Should we use “edit bib record” or “add new item” to copy-catalog?

  • “Add new item” — After finding a good quality record, a cataloger can click this link, add the library’s holding, and click submit. The item has been added to the catalog without making any changes to the bibliographic record. Easiest option!
  • “Edit bib record” — Performs the same task as “add new item” but with a few extra clicks: The library adds its holding information and clicks the “gold barrel” to save the record to the catalog. Additionally, for catalogers with full cataloging permissions, the bib record can be edited here, i.e. MARC field tag changes. It is a best practice for catalogers to edit bib records after receiving specialist training.
  • For questions or concerns, feel free to contact Kelly.

Expired patron accounts

While preparing the State Report, you may have noticed that you have many patron accounts which are expired and need to be deleted. It is possible to perform a “batch” delete of old patron accounts in VERSO. Auto-Graphics said: “The library can use the ‘expired patron maintenance’ option in Circ Admin to delete patrons by expiration date.” For example, perhaps you would like to delete all accounts which expired before 12/30/2018. You can complete this task at your library, or AG can perform it for you. If you would prefer the latter, email Kelly, and she will communicate with AG to get this done.
