New IRS Mileage Rates

On June 9, 2022, the IRS released a notice that the IRS Mileage Rate will be increasing starting July 1, 2022 and be in place through December 31, 2022. The current business rate is 58.5 cents per mile. Starting July 1, the new rate will be 62.5 cents per mile. Please follow this link to the IRS release notice for you to reference for your records. If you have other individual(s) that do your billings then be sure to relay this information to them to ensure they know of the rate change.

Notable Books Grant Application Open

The Notable Books Grant that several libraries utilize to assist in providing titles within their collections is now open. The fifteen newly added titles checklist can be found by following this link.

The grant is non-competitive and each library that decides to apply will be “reimbursed for the purchase of a single copy, in any format, of any or all of the books on the 2022 Kansas Notable Books list. Only the actual cost of the book will be reimbursed with grant funds.” Therefore, any other costs associated with the purchase of the books will be absorbed by the library (shipping & Handling, processing materials…etc.).

Here is the link to the grant application and below is a brief outline from the grant application of the timeline for submittal:

“The recipient library shall:
• To begin, submit a successful application on or before September 30, 2022
o (Step 1) Upon acknowledgement of a successful application, purchase books, and send invoices/receipts
and required checklist on or before November 15, 2022
o (Step 2) Sign and return the contract and assurances on or before November 30, 2022
o (Step 3) Provide a brief evaluation via SurveyMonkey due on or before December 15, 2022
• Promote Kansas Notable Books within your library and/or community through programs, displays, book clubs,
or other similar means.
• Further agrees to recognize IMLS in all promotions.”

The Notable Books webpage also provides promotional materials to assist with promoting the grant. When you get to the Notable Books webpage go to the bottom area of the page and it will have three tabs that you can click into. Choose the middle tab named “Promotional Materials” and click the tab. This will send you to another page that provides access to a poster, bookmark, banner, and folding brochure to use for promotion.

Looking at obtaining a Masters in Library and Information Studies?

I have done some research for one of our member librarians regarding scholarships. She thought it might be of interest to other librarians in our System that are considering going back to obtain their Masters in Library and Information Studies. The following is a listing of scholarships that could be used to assist with funding. This is by no means an exhaustive list. Their are more than likely others available that I did not find during my search. If any of our members know of other scholarship opportunities please relay them through the System ListServ.

Emporia State University is the only Accredited Master Program in Library Science in Kansas. They have some scholarship pages that you can look through:

School of Library and Information Management Scholarships

ESU – Graduate Scholarship Page, has two entitled “New Graduate Student Scholarship” & “McNair Scholarship” that could work for new students. The “Robert Grover Graduate Scholarship” is for a currently enrolled student if I read it correctly, since it is based on maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.75. The others give for Thesis work which could be used at the tail end of the program.

KLAEF (Kansas Library Association Educational Foundation Scholarship) is another resource. However, it is a one time only scholarship and is currently not taking applications, 2022 deadline is past. The Guidelines and Application is at the bottom of their webpage.

ALA (American Library Association Scholarship Program) is past the 2022 deadline, but is one that can be looked at again in 2023.

MPLA (Professional Development Grants) is listed on their webpage. However, they did not take applications for 2022. One would have to wait until 2023 to see if they start accepting applications again.

With most of these grants since they are associated with a library organization I would recommend that you become a member before you submit. Some have requirements that you be a member of the specific association and if others don’t they give preference to members.

The Community Foundation of Southwest Kansas has a scholarship program, but when I looked into the application it is only for college students working on an undergraduate degree.

When you get to a Master or Doctorate level degree it is harder to find general scholarships. They are offered through related business associations or through the school itself. I did find this page “Scholarships for Women” page that one can browse. On the main page I didn’t find anything for library science and when you click into a search feature they want a profile built to help search for scholarships which can be fill out if one chooses. I am unfamiliar with this page so one would need to proceed at their own risk.
